Take a Swing

Every year at the SXSW conference in Austin, they invite 20 speakers to answer the same question in 2 minutes each. It’s called 20×2. Two years ago, Glenda Bautista gave her answer to the question, “What If?” Glenda grew up as a New Yorker, and when an opportunity arose for her to take a job in San Francisco with Technorati, she had to decide whether she could risk leaving everything she knew behind to start a new life in a new city on the other side of the country. Her short video is definitely worth a watch.

I also kind of like the song playing in the background. It’s called “Leaving Ohio” by Brandtson. The video also includes a great quote by Mark Twain: β€œTwenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

  1. Aw. It’s so nice to know that it still inspires years later, thanks so much, Jonathan! πŸ™‚

One small correction: I didn’t leave New York to work at Technorati, although it *was* my second job in California, after I spent 3 years working for the job that I actually moved for. πŸ™‚ After Technorati, I recently did a stint at a health search engine company, given your background. It’s been a interesting journey out here, I have to say!

    The original write-up is here:

There’s a much better, non-fuzzy version here, (which is the file that I actually presented):

And lastly, I’m quite intrigued by your domain name, as I actually own (and do nothing with) encephalosmack.com. πŸ™‚ (It was actually the name of the first zine I ever did while in high school.)

    • Wow, thanks for replying! Sorry about the factual errors. I was a little unsure about the details, but I still found the story very inspiring. Thanks for pointing me toward the original blog post and the better quality video. I’ll update the link in the post.

Also, that’s interesting about encephalosmack.com. For “doing nothing with it”, there sure is a lot of stuff on there and it looks pretty awesome!

      Anyways, thanks again for commenting!
